The Pat Miller Neighborhood Square Art Marker,

aka, “The Del Ray Blocks”

Alexandria, VA, 2021

Upon winning a national public sculpture Request for Proposal sponsored by the City of Alexandria, VA in 2019, the Community Association and I began a lengthy process to develop a design for this way finding, place making, art marker for the charming Del Ray neighborhood. The COVID pandemic put a halt on our progress until early 2021, when we resumed activity once again.

The project was finally realized in October 2021, just in time for the 2021 Art on the Avenue event in Del Ray. The piece is named after Pat Miller, who has been instrumental in the neighborhood and known as a community leader.

Materials include welded 2” tubular steel, 3/4” CNC cut marine grade MDO board withe designs directly printed onto the surface and coated in an acrylic sealer. The base is 1/4” stainless steel with a spiral polished pattern applied to the surface by the talented Jim Nichols, my welder.

I would like to thank Matthew Harwood, Public Arts Coordinator for the City of Alexandria for all his support and assistance.
